Let go of Pain, Tension and Stress!

Alexander Technique.jpg

The Alexander Technique shows you how to let of unnecessary physical and mental tension, and to move more freely, so you feel more relaxed, have more energy and vitality, and experience less pain, discomfort and stress.  Its effectiveness has been confirmed through numerous scientific studies and almost a hundred years of practical experience!

I was dubious about the effects of the Alexander Technique when I first went in to experience it, but I found out almost immediately that the benefits were total - both physically and mentally - and, happily, have also been long-lasting.
— Joanne Woodward, actress

In the sessions we work with everyday movements such as sitting, standing, speaking and walking. The teacher uses skilled hand contact to show you more relaxed ways of doing things that put less stress on your body. In time this can allow many forms of musculo-skeletal pain to resolve. Letting go of physical tension also helps you to feel more relaxed and in control, and increases confidence and wellbeing.

Relaxed posture and poise

The Alexander Technique improves the way your body looks and feels without you needing to strain to maintain a posture or position, or feeling you need to be pulling yourself into shape

The Alexander Technique offers a radical approach to improving movement, posture and poise, which involves letting go of tension and stress so that your body can naturally come into balance and alignment on its own — rather than trying to hold yourself in a set position.

The effect of lessons can be dramatic — often people gain a couple of centimetres in height as they 'let off the brakes' and allow their postural system to function as it should.  They look taller, and more upright, open and aligned. They also feel more comfortable: having Alexander lessons has sometimes been compared to taking off a heavy rucksack you didn't even know you were carrying ! Everything feels lighter and easier in a way many of us have not experienced since we were children.

Often we carry a great deal of muscular tension in our bodies, and over time this can result in distortion, poor alignment and pain. Through the lessons you become aware of how you are pulling yourself out of shape, and how to let go into a new feeling of freedom and ease. In the process this takes the strain off nerves, muscles and joints, and give your body the space it needs to heal itself.

The Alexander Technique helped a long-standing back problem and to get a good night’s sleep after many years of tossing and turning.
— Paul Newman, actor

The Alexander Technique has been helping back pain sufferers for almost a hundred years, and its beneficial effects have been validated by several peer-reviews scientific studies. You can read about some of them here.

Relax and enjoy life!

The Alexander Technique offers an effective body/mind approach to dealing with stress. It helps your nervous system quieten down and allows you to come back into a more balanced and relaxed state. Often when we have been stressed for a long time we are caught in circular patterns of over-stimulation which can be hard to get our of on our own.  A skilled Alexander teacher uses hands on contact and simple instructions to help settle your nervous system, and from that quieter place can then help you learn you what you are doing that is keeping you in a stress cycle, and encourage you to let go and make choices that lead to peace rather than to stress!

The Alexander Technique is a way to transform stress to joy. It’s for anyone who wants to be in contact with their own body and the way we tense ourselves and relax ourselves. It’s another way of moving.

Age Gracefully

As we age we become more aware of how much we depend on our bodies, and how important it is to take care of them! This is also often a time when it can feel as if our body is letting us down more than it used to. It can get hurt more easily, and takes longer to heal, and we can start to lose the ease of movement, balance and easy upright posture that we had when we were younger.

The Alexander Technique is a proven resource which can help you to take care of your body as you age to help you avoid injury, and to maintain your posture, balance and poise.

Over the years many of us accumulate a great deal of muscular tension in our bodies simply from the stress and strain of everyday life, and this  can gradually result in distortion, poor alignment and pain. In addition the range of movement that we have available to us may become more limited and constrained. When we grow older the effects of this strain and limitation can start to become more noticeable.

Fortunately human beings are very resilient and it is never too late to make positive changes! In Alexander  lessons we look at your movement patterns and the way you hold yourself to see what you are doing that is putting your structure under unnecessary strain and tension. You can become aware of what you are doing to pull yourself out of shape and learn how to let go from that into a new feeling of freedom and ease — at any age!
